Welcome to CyclingMurcia.

Bienvenidos! Welcome to Murcia, I hope we can provide cyclists with a true insight of some of the paths less travelled. I started road cycling after finishing University. After building up laps around Birkenhead Park and later cycling to North Wales, I was hooked. I registered at the Manchester Velodrome to become a British Cycling Club coach in 2004. I remember meeting Rachel Heal on the course and how if her team-mates won the Giro d’Italia Femminile, they wouldn’t be paid much…

I came back to the Eureka Cafe on the Wirral and remember that Steve Cummings was shortly to sign his first Pro-Contract abroad. I looked around at the cycling scene back then and noted that he was the last ‘junior’ around. There was a wealth of knowledge around the seniors via the Boardman family but I was getting itchy feet. I got a temp job as a topographic surveyor in Surrey in the meantime and explored the hills in the South. I sent my CV in 2006 to the four main cycling countries in Europe, I was going to teach English, earn a basic wage, but cycle a bit higher than the hills in North Wales.

I ended up in Murcia by pure chance, with 3 words of Spanish but living within the local community. I’d cycle with local cyclists in the morning up to 120km, eat big, prepare classes, teach from 4-10pm and then maybe go out for tapas if I had the energy. The idea to start cycling camps came to me in 2007 as the pros were complaining that the “Training camps” were just marketing events in Mallorca at that time. I became a SKYRIDE leader with British Cycling over the summer of 2009 vetting their routes and also enlisted on a SICI bike-fitting course.

I took a risk as a freelance teacher in Murcia and was swamped with private classes. They became like family. On top of this, Individual cyclists that visited me ranged from:

Ironmen- American Crit Champions- Royal Marines.

As from Sept 2014 all my energy will be put towards CyclingMurcia and the experience I’ve gained living here is yours for the sharing.
